This US presidential election marks the first in which cryptocurrencies have come up as a major policy issue, and the industry is preparing (and lobbying) for the possibility that President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will bring it up in a debate on Thursday. 😂
To that end, crypto advocacy group Solidarity with Crypto has launched an online letter-writing campaign to persuade host CNN to bring up cryptocurrency as a talking point. Almost 2,300 people signed and sent notes "calling for a crypto question" on Wednesday, a spokesman for the group said.
Biden's record on digital assets is familiar to the industry, it just needs to review his regulation, White House statements and the actions of the US regulators he appoints. The Trump administration has not made any significant moves on crypto, and its past skepticism has only recently turned into glowing support for the technology.
Trump, who opposes the US issuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) and has emerged as a vocal supporter of US crypto mining, has sought to contrast himself with Biden's efforts to tax miners and his administration's interest in studying CBDCs.
“We appreciate that candidates recognize the importance of not only discussing how to regulate digital assets, but also creating responsible regulations that will not stifle innovation in the United States,” a spokesperson for the DeFi Education Fund said.
