TikTok has announced it will shut down operations in the US on Sunday, January 19, unless the Biden administration ensures its service providers, such as Apple, Google, Amazon, and Oracle, won’t face legal consequences for supporting the app.
This follows a Supreme Court decision upholding a law that requires ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to divest its ownership. TikTok CEO Shou Chew has appealed to the administration for immediate action to prevent the app from going dark.
The Department of Justice has doubled down on enforcing the ban, with penalties of $5,000 per user for non-compliant service providers. The app’s future remains uncertain as President-elect Trump has expressed intentions to address the issue but has yet to take concrete action.
