Atlanta-based private Emory University owns 2.7 million shares of spot
#Bitcoin-ETF. Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust worth nearly $15.1 million, according to a report filed by the institution with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Earlier, investments in cryptocurrency-based exchange-traded funds were reported by the pension funds of Wisconsin and Jersey City. However, Emory University became the first educational institution to invest in this type of asset.
The Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (
$BTC ), approved in July 2024, was a derivative of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), another Grayscale bitcoin-focused exchange-traded fund. According to an announcement on the asset manager's website,
#BTC☀ provides passive participation in crypto trading, and the ETF's value reflects the movement of the flagship asset's exchange rate. In addition, BTC offers “access to bitcoin at a lower price per share.”
In addition to the spot bitcoin ETFs, Emory University owns 4,312 shares of U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, now valued at $768,269, according to the report to the SEC. On Friday, October 25, Coinbase securities traded at $205.70 on the NASDAQ Stock Market.
Interestingly, Coinbase is also the custodian of Grayscale bitcoins.
