Last Friday, a hacker issued a $14 million refund to an individual who lost 1155 WBTC, valued at $71 million, due to a fraudulent link attack. This event represents one of the largest recent fraudulent link attacks in the cryptocurrency space. Interestingly, the hacker who appropriated the assets returned a total of 4676 ETH in increments to the victimized investor.
In this case, the victim intended to send 1155 WBTC to a newly created address. This address initially appeared in the transaction history after the user sent 0.05 ETH to it. However, exploiting the user's oversight, the hacker created a similar-looking address by matching the first and last few characters, making it appear legitimate in the transaction log.
The victim, failing to verify the complete address, inadvertently sent all their WBTC to this deceptive address, resulting in a massive loss. The hacker then made a small transaction of nearly 0 ETH to the victim’s account, further complicating the transaction history. A thorough check of the entire address could have prevented this costly mistake. The uncertainty remains whether the hacker will return any more of the stolen funds.
