According to PANews, Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency and digital identity project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has recently achieved a significant victory in Kenya following a suspension order in 2023. On June 14, 2024, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) of the Kenyan National Police Service issued an official statement, announcing the abandonment of the investigation into Worldcoin.

The statement was a formal response to a request for an update on the investigation status submitted by Worldcoin's lawyers in May 2024. The DCI pointed out that Kenya's public prosecution department has agreed and ordered the closure of the Worldcoin case, and the police will no longer take further action. The DCI stated in the announcement, 'We have swiftly and objectively investigated a series of allegations about Worldcoin's activities in Kenya during 2022/3, these allegations involved the alleged illegal collection and transmission of sensitive personal data.'

After the investigation, the Kenyan police advised Worldcoin to ensure business registration in the country and obtain appropriate permissions and coordination from the Data Protection Commission and the Kenyan Communications Authority. At the same time, the police also recommended that Worldcoin conduct strict reviews and sign legal contracts with all third-party suppliers in Kenya.
