Following today’s $5 million liquidation, the Ethereum whale has now lost a total of $18.5 million. Additionally, another $51 million is at risk if Bitcoin’s price drops further.

Significant Loss for the Ethereum Whale: $18.5 Million

According to data shared by Lookonchain, the Ethereum whale has faced its third liquidation within the past month. The latest loss involved the liquidation of 1,495 ETH worth $4.97 million. Prior to this, on December 10, 2024, the whale experienced the liquidation of 44.86 WBTC worth $4.37 million, and on December 6, 2024, a position of 95.46 WBTC worth $9.25 million was also liquidated. These events bring the total losses to $18.5 million.

Whales in the crypto world often speculate on price movements, but their strategies don’t always succeed. For example, another whale recently lost $20 million due to liquidation of a Sui position when its price dropped below a certain threshold. These incidents highlight the risks associated with high-leverage trading strategies.

Risk of Further Liquidations

Lookonchain reports that the Ethereum whale holds another position in the Aave protocol involving 541.68 WBTC ($51.1 million). This position is at risk of liquidation if Bitcoin’s price falls to $90,810, which is only 2.5% below the current value of $93,200.

Given Bitcoin’s current downward trend, with a 3% decline over the past 24 hours, a potential liquidation could have a significant impact on the market. The combination of Bitcoin’s price drop and high-leverage trades poses a substantial risk for the whale.

What’s Next?

The Ethereum whale has already suffered $18.5 million in losses across three liquidation events in just one month. Additionally, another $51.1 million is at risk if Bitcoin’s price dips below $90,810.

Future developments depend on Bitcoin’s price trajectory. If Bitcoin regains upward momentum, the risk of liquidation will decrease. However, further price declines could result in even greater losses. This situation underscores the dangers of high-leverage trading strategies in the crypto market.
