Italy's data protection agency has slapped OpenAI with a $15.7 million fine for mishandling user data in its ChatGPT model. The Italian Data Protection Authority (IDPA) found OpenAI guilty of not reporting a data breach and processing personal data without a legal basis. Additionally, OpenAI failed to implement age verification, risking exposure to minors. As part of the penalty, OpenAI must launch a six-month public awareness campaign about data collection and user rights. The IDPA noted OpenAI's cooperation during the probe, which helped reduce the fine.
