Paul Atkins, who served as an SEC commissioner in the 2000s and is currently involved with crypto and tokenization, has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to become the next chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Trump announced his decision on Dec. 4 via Truth Social, highlighting Atkins’ understanding of crypto and his position as co-chairman of the Digital Chamber’s Token Alliance since 2017.
Atkins is expected to take a lighter stance on crypto compared to current SEC chair Gary Gensler. Crypto industry members are hopeful that Atkins will treat crypto reasonably, with Coinbase CLO Paul Grewal praising Atkins’ “commitment to balance” and calling new SEC leadership a “sorely needed” change.
Blockchain Association CEO Kristin Smith called Atkins an “excellent choice,” highlighting the benefit of a “new perspective” based on Atkins’ thorough understanding of the crypto ecosystem. Atkins must still be confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn in before taking on the role.
