The $200 Million Bitcoin Loss That Still Haunts Him 💔💸
.
Do you remember Stephen Thomas, the German programmer who became famous for losing access to 7,002 #Bitcoin? In 2011, Stephen received 8,000 Bitcoins as payment for his work on a Bitcoin-related project. Back then, Bitcoin was still in its early stages, and its value was just around $0.30 per BTC. 💰
Unfortunately, Stephen lost access to his digital wallet after forgetting the password. The wallet was heavily encrypted, and despite his best efforts to recover the password, he couldn’t regain access, losing 7,002 Bitcoins, now worth over $200 million. 😔
Stephen tried every method to recover the password, but all his attempts were unsuccessful. In a 2021 interview with The New York Times, he shared, "Bitcoin was just an experiment back then, and I never imagined it would become so valuable."
"I would just lie in bed, think about it, and then go to the computer with some new strategy, but it never worked, and I'd be desperate again," he said. 💻🔑
