Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, played a significant role in OpenAI abandoning its planned 2018 cryptocurrency initial public offering (ICO). OpenAI was founded in 2015 by Sam Altman and Greg Brockman to develop a safe artificial general intelligence (AGI). Musk joined as co-chairman and invested $44 million, but the company faced financial troubles in 2018.
Altman and Brockman wanted to launch an ICO to solve the problem, but Musk disagreed. Musk left OpenAI in 2018 and founded his own AI company, xAI. In August 2024, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its founders, alleging fraud and unfair competition. Microsoft is now also a defendant since they work closely with OpenAI and provide significant financial support.
OpenAI is now known for innovations like ChatGPT, but the conflict between them and Elon Musk continues.
