In an exclusive interview with BitcoinWorld, We got a chance to interact with Mauricio Magaldi, Head of Product at Midnight, We discuss What is Midnight is all about & why its been needed ,

Can you explain how Midnight’s Layer 1 blockchain ensures data protection for decentralized applications, and what distinguishes it from other privacy-focused blockchains?

To answer that question, it’s important to explain the nuance between privacy chains and Midnight, which is not a privacy chain but a data protection blockchain. While privacy chains provide anonymity so that all transactions remain private, Midnight leverages both public and private states to enable dApps to decide when and with whom they share information while ensuring all data is safeguarded.

Midnight achieves this by keeping data on the user’s device (the private state) rather than storing it on the public blockchain, reducing the potential for large-scale data breaches through greater decentralization. Smart contracts built on Midnight can manage those two states at once so data can be transferred between them as needed while ensuring the data and its metadata are safe using zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs).

This is particularly beneficial for sensitive data, such as financial records or personal information, as it allows businesses to conduct secure transactions and interactions without unnecessarily revealing data or metadata.

How does Midnight leverage Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) to enhance data security, and what specific challenges in dApp development and public blockchain networks does this technology address?

Midnight leverages ZKPs, specifically ZK Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge (ZK Snarks), to enhance data security and enable greater compliance. By leveraging familiar tooling through its TypeScript-based programming language, Midnight makes the creation of programmable, secure and compliant dApps much more accessible—especially given the complexities of coding with ZK tech. These features address the lack of confidentiality on public blockchains, given their transparent nature, while maintaining high security standards and scalability.

In what ways does Midnight empower businesses to balance regulatory compliance with the need for data privacy, and how does this influence greater enterprise adoption of blockchain technology?

To date, enterprises have been hesitant to adopt blockchain technology because of, among other factors, its excessive transparency, which results in too much information being publicly accessible and makes compliance difficult. Midnight addresses these key pain points by providing businesses with selective disclosure capabilities, striking a balance between transparency, confidentiality and security.

This is achieved using ZKPs, thanks to which Midnight can enable organizations to comply with regulations such as Know Your Customer (KYC) without revealing users’ personal information. A business’ activities can therefore be attested without any underlying data being revealed to other parties. Midnight allows dApp builders to selectively disclose what data needs to be public and what remains private in adherence with their local regulations. Thus, Midnight provides both data protection and enables compliance through programmability.

What is the significance of metadata protection in the context of blockchain security, and how does Midnight’s approach prevent sensitive inferences from being made based on metadata?

Metadata is often overlooked; indeed blockchains commonly disclose transactions’ metadata to everyone with a suitable application, meaning even bad actors can get their hands on it. However, metadata can be used to make correlations and inferences about transactions, in turn compromising the security of highly sensitive information.

Midnight removes the risk of metadata leakage by granting it the same level of confidentiality as the data itself. In doing so, Midnight prevents inferences from being made using metadata and improves overall security, which is crucial for wider adoption in industries handling sensitive data or facing strict regulations.

How does Midnight facilitate developer accessibility, particularly for those transitioning from Web2 to Web3? Can you discuss the benefits of using familiar programming languages and tooling?

Midnight provides a developer-friendly environment by leveraging TypeScript, one of the most popular programming languages. By allowing developers to leverage their existing skills and tools, Midnight facilitates a smoother transition from traditional web development to blockchain-based applications. The use of familiar languages like TypeScript offers several advantages, including shortened learning curve, increased productivity, and the ability to rapidly prototype and deploy dApps.

What role does selective disclosure play in Midnight’s strategy for data protection, and how does this feature benefit organizations looking to protect their sensitive information on the blockchain?

Midnight’s programmable data protection enables shielding of sensitive data, but also selective disclosure to third parties if mandated or required by regulation. This approach enables businesses to maintain control over their data, ensuring that only pertinent information is shared with authorized parties. By allowing organizations to manage what data is disclosed, Midnight helps protect against data breaches and unauthorized access, fostering trust and compliance. This capability encourages greater enterprise adoption of blockchain technology by ensuring that sensitive information remains secure while still meeting legal and operational needs.

As Head of Product at Midnight, what are the key challenges you’ve encountered in developing a blockchain that prioritizes both data protection and regulatory compliance?

Striking the right balance between privacy and transparency has been crucial and performance optimization has been a focus area given the computational overhead of ZKPs, which are key to Midnight’s core offerings. Further, ensuring secure future interoperability with other blockchains and existing systems while maintaining data security guarantees has been technically challenging.

Despite these hurdles, we’re making significant strides in realizing Midnight’s vision of empowering data-protecting applications and providing developers with powerful yet accessible tools for the next generation of enterprise blockchain solutions.

Looking forward, what are your long-term goals for Midnight, and how do you see the platform evolving to meet the growing demands for privacy and security in the blockchain ecosystem?

Our long-term goal is to establish Midnight as a leading platform for data protection dApps and act as the final, missing piece for Web3 adoption. Interoperability with other chains will be the next evolution for Midnight as this will enable existing projects on other chains to leverage Midnight’s data protection features. Through this flexible framework, Midnight will support the needs of projects built on its chain and on others, driving both adoption and greater cross-ecosystem collaboration.
