Rootstock, Bitcoin Layer 2, Verifies Zero-Knowledge SNARK

Bitcoin layer 2 platform Rootstock has interactively verified a SNARK proof, marking a significant advancement for zero-knowledge proofs on the Bitcoin blockchain.

Using BitVMX, Rootstock's enhanced version of BitVM—which enables Ethereum-style smart contracts on Bitcoin—the SNARK (Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge) was successfully verified.

This technology allows one to prove knowledge without revealing any information and without direct interaction between prover and verifier.

The verification occurred on Rootstock's mainnet on Thursday, following a successful testnet completion the previous day.

In a statement, Rootstock's team described this as a significant milestone for the BitVMX proving system, highlighting its ability to challenge and validate SNARK verifiers on-chain.

They noted that this breakthrough paves the way for applying this verification process to any program compiled to the RISC-V architecture, leveraging BitVMX's general-purpose virtual CPU.
