As anticipation builds for the premiere of HBO‘s highly-anticipated series on the origins of Bitcoin, the crypto world is full of speculation.

The series, set to release on October 8, promises to delve into Bitcoin’s early history. Many hope it will uncover the identity of its enigmatic creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

The anonymous figure behind Bitcoin’s development has been a source of intrigue for over a decade, and rumors about Nakamoto’s true identity are rife, especially with this new documentary on the horizon.

Among those captivated by the upcoming reveal is Billy Markus, the co-creator of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that began as a parody but has since gained significant popularity. Markus, who goes by the alias “Shibetoshi Nakamoto” as a tribute to Bitcoin’s creator, recently shared his thoughts on the ongoing speculation.

According to Markus, it’s possible that Satoshi Nakamoto was not a single person but rather a group of individuals, similar to the theory that multiple people contributed to William Shakespeare’s works.

Markus referenced several key figures in Bitcoin’s early days, including Hal Finney and Len Sassaman, who were prominent advocates for its development in its infancy. The theory posits that these individuals and others may have worked under the pseudonym “Satoshi Nakamoto” to launch Bitcoin and set it on its revolutionary path.

The Shakespearean Connection

Conspiracy theories about Shakespeare’s identity are not new, and the comparison has been made for a long time. Speculation over Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity has been alive for so many years that many believe that Bitcoin came from the work of multiple minds.

Computer scientist Hal Finney and cryptographer Len Sassaman, both of whom have worked with Bitcoin, have been cited often as possible contributors to the project. Unfortunately, both individuals had since passed away, rendering any claims of their involvement unverifiable.

Unresolved Mystery

Despite numerous theories, Satoshi Nakamoto’s true identity remains one of the crypto world’s most enduring mysteries. As the HBO documentary’s release date approaches, hopes are high that it may offer new insights or revelations.

But even if the documentary does offer clues, finding definitive proof might still be necessary — in large part because those concerned may not be alive to affirm or deny their involvement.

Markus’s comments have fanned the flames of speculation and the crypto market eagerly waits for the series. Did Satoshi Nakamoto only exist as one person or were they a group, but no matter who it was the legacy of Bitcoin’s creator lives on and will influence how cryptocurrency is shaped in the future.
