Man Caught at Customs Hiding US$200K on His Body Parts
On September 30, a man was caught trying to smuggle $200,000 in cash through the Gongbei Port of Entry. The man, surnamed Chen, a Macau resident, was intercepted by customs officers after they noticed his suspicious behavior while attempting to exit China through the "no declaration" lane.
Chen had been using a backpack to conceal his abdomen, raising suspicions among the customs officers. Upon further inspection, they found 20 bundles of U.S. dollars strapped to his abdomen and inner thighs with elastic bandages and plastic wrap. The total amount seized was $200,000, equivalent to approximately 1.4 million RMB.
Chinese customs regulations state that passengers are required to declare cash exceeding 20,000 RMB or the foreign currency equivalent of more than $5,000 when entering or leaving the country.
