In a first, over 50% of Ethereum transactions took place on layer-2s (L2s) in the first half of June 2024. The Dencun upgrade (EIP-4844) was instrumental in this growth, pushing the L2 ecosystem's TVL to an all-time high of $48.2 billion. However, most rollups still rely on centralized sequencers, raising concerns about potential censorship, security risks, and the possibility of a single entity extracting all network value. The recent exploit on Linea, a Consensys-backed zkEVM rollup, which cost users over $2.6 million in ETH, has highlighted the urgency of decentralizing sequencers.
