USA Could Sell 1.4 Billion Pounds of Cheese to Fund Bitcoin Reserves
The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) has put forward an unexpected proposal: the United States should liquidate its massive cheese reserves and use the proceeds to buy Bitcoin. According to BPI, strategic reserves should hold "digital gold" instead of cheese.
In a March 7 post on X, the institute stated:

"America should immediately liquidate its strategic cheese reserve and convert the proceeds into Bitcoin."
According to available data, the U.S. holds approximately 1.4 to 1.5 billion pounds of cheese, with an estimated value of $3.4 billion. These reserves exist due to government policies aimed at stabilizing dairy prices and supporting farmers.
Why Should America Invest in Bitcoin Instead of Cheese?
Mathew Sigel, Head of Research at VanEck, supported BPI's idea and questioned the need for cheese reserves. According to him, it would be more beneficial to replace this asset with a neutral store of value like Bitcoin, which could provide greater long-term returns.
This proposal comes shortly after Trump’s announcement of the U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, a plan to hold BTC as a store of value without selling.
The U.S. Bitcoin Reserve: A New Fort Knox?
President Donald Trump recently announced the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, sparking discussions on how the U.S. could expand its Bitcoin holdings without burdening taxpayers.
David Sacks, the White House-appointed "Crypto Czar," stated:
💎 "The U.S. will not sell any Bitcoin stored in the reserve. It will be kept as a store of value. The Reserve is like a digital Fort Knox for the cryptocurrency often called ‘digital gold.’"
Alternative Ways to Fund the U.S. Bitcoin Reserve
Selling cheese reserves isn’t the only suggestion. Matthew Pines, Executive Director of the Bitcoin Policy Institute, proposed other ways the U.S. could expand its Bitcoin reserves without impacting the federal budget:
🔹 Excess U.S. dollars
🔹 Gold reserves
🔹 Foreign currency holdings
🔹 Revenue from privatizing government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs)
Selling Cheese to Buy Bitcoin: A Bold Move or a Crazy Idea?
While this proposal may sound radical, Bitcoin advocates believe the U.S. should begin diversifying its strategic assets. On the other hand, traditional asset supporters argue that Bitcoin remains highly volatile, and physical assets like gold—or even cheese—may provide more stability.
What do you think? Should America sell its cheese and buy Bitcoin? 🧀🚀💰
