Crypto Gaming Roundup: The Latest Moves in the Space
The world of crypto gaming is buzzing with activity, from new game releases to token airdrops and innovative network developments. To help you stay on top of it all, we’ve got the scoop on the biggest news from the past week.
Hamster Kombat Takes a Leap Forward
In a significant move, the makers of Telegram’s popular tap-to-earn game Hamster Kombat have announced plans to create a layer-2 network on top of The Open Network (TON). This decision was made possible by a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) vote, which saw 1.1 billion HMSTR token voting power in favor of the move. The top two voters, however, hold a significant 88% of all voting power, giving them substantial influence.
But that’s not all – the devs have also revealed that Hamster Kombat’s highly anticipated second season will be “more than just a game.” Three games are currently in development to become the core of an entertainment ecosystem using the IP, dubbed HamsterVerse. A closed beta is already underway for 30,000 community members.
Off the Grid Wins Big
Avalanche-based shooter Off the Grid has been making waves in the gaming community, winning not one but two Game of the Year awards – one from GG and another from Gam3s. The battle royale shooter also made it to Rolling Stone’s year-end gaming list. Gunzilla Games, the studio behind Off the Grid, has shared its plans for 2025, including an estimated Q1 mainnet launch for its GUNZ network and the introduction of ranked and solo queue modes.
Illuvium’s New Direction
Crypto gaming franchise Illuvium has announced a shift in its strategy, prioritizing efforts on one game at a time. The team will focus on the auto-battler Illuvium Arena, with plans to reduce microtransactions, add more content, and raise additional funding. The possibility of temporarily shutting down the flagship title Illuvium Overworld is also on the table, with the goal of creating a “fully realized experience.”
