The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has successfully disrupted a major North Korea-based cryptocurrency laundering network. The network, which has been operating for years, has laundered millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency for the DPRK, facilitating its illicit activities. OFAC worked closely with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to identify and dismantle the network, which used a UAE-based front company, Green Alpine Trading, LLC, to facilitate the conversion of cryptocurrency to fiat currency. OFAC also blacklisted two China-based individuals who have been supporting the network's operations since 2022. This action demonstrates the US government’s commitment to combating North Korea’s illicit activities and its use of cryptocurrency to evade sanctions. The disruption of this network will make it more difficult for the DPRK to finance its nuclear and missile programs and other destabilizing activities.
