The dollar button. Since the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk, rumors have been rife about the integration of cryptocurrencies on the platform. While nothing seemed to be moving on that front, a recent publication from Elon Musk rekindled the flame.

Elon Musk teases the arrival of payments on

In October 2022, Elon Musk acquired Twitter, now renamed X. Quickly after his acquisition, speculation about adding features related to cryptocurrencies began.

And, for once, it was Elon Musk himself who revived these speculations. Thus, on November 25, he shared a screenshot of the X application. Quickly, many Internet users noticed the presence of a “$” button in the application’s navigation bar.

For his part, Internet user Nima Owji speculated that it was a button allowing money to be sent via X Payments. A hypothesis which was confirmed by Elon Musk himself. Nima Owji posted about this on X, and Musk responded to confirm the hypothesis.

X Payments: a long-standing project

The X Payments service has been in development for several months now. Indeed, as of August 2023, X had obtained a license for digital payments in seven US states. X has quietly acquired money transmitting licenses across the United States in recent years.

Subsequently, in April 2024, the X Payments service was unveiled. At that time, many Internet users had already speculated about the addition of cryptocurrencies to X Payments. It now remains to be seen whether the service will be solely dollar-based, or whether cryptocurrencies will be part of the equation.

Regardless, X is not the only social network exploring cryptocurrencies. Thus, in April a subsidiary of the social network Tik-Tok announced a partnership with the SUI
