Blockchain gaming studio Mythical Games and FIFA are developing a new free-to-play mobile football game, FIFA Rivals. The Polkadot-powered blockchain title will launch on iOS and Android in the summer of 2025. It will allow players to build and manage their football clubs and compete against others in real-time matches.
FIFA partners with Mythical Games to develop a new football game
Mythical Games and FIFA partnership adds to a growing sporting association collaboration trend with blockchain gaming studios. FIFA Rivals which will establish in 2025, is set to work similarly to the NFL Rivals game launched by Mythical Games in April 2023.
The NFL Rivals game was developed with Polkadot technology on the Mythos blockchain, allowing players to collect and trade NFT player cards.
Similarly, FIFA rivals will be built with the same technology and on the same Mythos blockchain. It will allow gamers to play against others in real-time online matches and build their football clubs with past and future players.
Moreover, Mythical Games CEO John Linden expects the new game to attract over 100 million gamers, considering that the NFL Rivals game already has over 6 million players, with a lesser audience than FIFA. He also emphasized that their goal would be to create new benchmarks in the Web 3 space.
Nate Nesbitt, spokesperson for Mythical Games, also commented:
“FIFA Rivals is designed to be highly accessible, featuring a shallow learning curve coupled with advanced features for hardcore players to explore. The partnerships we have with both the NFL and FIFA should open the door for other collaborations between Web3 games studios and major sports titles.”

FIFA has several NFT and Web 3 collaborations
FIFA Rivals is not the first NFT and Web 3 project that FIFA has worked on. In 2022, the federation partnered with several blockchain startups to develop games and collectible applications during the Qatar World Cup.
Additionally, FIFA launched an inaugural collection of 100 NFTs on December 15, 2023, featuring the chance to secure tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. In the same month, another 900 digital collectibles were issued on the Polygon network and OpenSea.
Currently, the FIFA Collect NFT collectibles platform is available on Algorand and Ethereum’s Polygon.
