Reported by The Washington Post (October 15, 2024): Netanyahu tells US that Israel will strike Iranian military targets, not nuclear or oil targets

The signal was seen as a sign of restraint after concerns that an Israeli strike on oil or nuclear facilities could trigger a wider war.

When Biden and Netanyahu spoke on Wednesday - their first phone call in more than seven weeks after months of rising tensions between the two - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he planned to target military infrastructure in Iran.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday vowed that Israel would respond to Iran's October 1 attack on Israel, saying that the response would be “precise, painful and shocking.” However, he added, “we are not interested in opening additional fronts or new conflicts.”

An Israeli strike on Iran would take place before the US elections on November 5, officials familiar with the matter said.

The retaliatory action will be calibrated to avoid the perception of “political interference in the US elections,” US officials said.
