Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd admitted in the latest HBO documentary that he is the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto – but the confession is not as straightforward as it seems.

HBO Documentary Focused on Unmasking Satoshi

In an HBO documentary aimed at uncovering the identity of the pseudonymous Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, Canadian developer Peter Todd was identified as the inventor of the cryptocurrency. Cullen Hoback, the producer of the documentary "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery," confronted Todd and Blockstream founder Adam Back with evidence that led him to conclude Todd was Nakamoto, according to a report by Politico on October 9.

Todd's "Confession"

The documentary’s finale climaxes with Todd responding to a direct question from Hoback, saying: "Well, yeah, I am Satoshi Nakamoto." However, this statement does not serve as concrete proof that Todd is indeed the inventor of Bitcoin. Todd is known for using the phrase "I am Satoshi" to support the real creator's right to privacy.

Todd Denies Being Satoshi

Even before the documentary's release, Todd publicly denied being the creator of Bitcoin and challenged Hoback’s conclusions, particularly after clips from the documentary leaked online, pointing to him as Nakamoto. After the documentary aired, Todd once again took to social media to refute the claims. On October 8, when asked on X (formerly Twitter) to clarify whether he is Satoshi, Todd simply replied: "I am not Satoshi."

Previous Jokes and Speculation

Todd has joked multiple times about being Satoshi. In a 2019 episode of the podcast "What Bitcoin Did," Todd told host Peter McCormack: "I am Satoshi, just like everyone else is." During the podcast, he also mentioned making his first Bitcoin purchase when the price was around 20 cents, which would place the transaction in October 2010, two years after the Bitcoin whitepaper was published on October 31, 2008.

Why Todd Was Named as Satoshi

Hoback's theory that Todd is Nakamoto is based on a chat log message where Todd claimed to be "the world's foremost expert on how to sacrifice one's Bitcoins," adding that he "made one such sacrifice, and I did it manually." Hoback interpreted this message as a confession that Todd permanently cut off his access to 1.1 million Bitcoins – worth $69.4 billion – commonly believed to be held by Nakamoto.

Reasons for the Bitcoin Creator’s Anonymity

Before Hoback’s explosive revelation about Todd, the Canadian Bitcoin developer provided his own theories on why the creator of Bitcoin chose to remain anonymous. According to Todd, "What if the real reason for using the name Satoshi [...] was so that people could take Bitcoin seriously? So they could believe it was created by a legitimate cryptographer and not just some kid still in school?"

What do you think, is Peter Todd really Satoshi Nakamoto, or is this just another mystery in the endless search for Bitcoin's true creator? Share your thoughts in the comments!
