Like many topics, Adams' relationship with cryptocurrencies is not without controversy. A year after the mayor began receiving part of his salary in BTC and ETH, he got into big trouble for failing to disclose his cryptocurrency assets in a mandatory report to the city's Conflict of Interest Commission.
Since then, Adams' legal troubles have escalated significantly: in September, the politician became the first mayor in New York City history to face criminal charges while in office. The U. S. Department of Justice charged him with accepting luxury trips and other favors from Turkish officials and businessmen in exchange for preferential treatment for that country's interests in New York City.
In the months following the indictment, Adams strongly rejected numerous calls for his resignation. He has also begun working with cryptocurrency advocate Donald Trump, who took office as U. S. president on Jan. 20 and will oversee the Justice Department.
