FIFA Rivals, a new mobile soccer game, is being created in collaboration between Mythical Games and FIFA. It is set to release in summer 2025 for iOS and Android platforms. Players will be able to build and manage their own soccer club and compete against others in real-time online matches. The game will also integrate NFTs, with an in-game NFT marketplace allowing players to trade their favorite soccer players’ NFTs.

Mythical Games, known for its NFL Rivals mobile game, has experience with NFT integration. Their previous title, NFL Rivals, launched in April 2023 and has been downloaded more than 6 million times. FIFA Rivals will follow a similar model on the Mythos blockchain, allowing players to collect and trade iconic footballers, past or present.

This collaboration is not the first time FIFA has experimented with NFT and Web3 solutions. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, FIFA partnered with several blockchain startups to launch games and collectible apps. The announcement comes amid renewed optimism for the NFT sector. However, the NFT market still faces challenges, with 98% of NFTs exhibiting little trading activity and only 0.2% being profitable.

Creators and investors continue to face hurdles as many NFTs lose more than half their value shortly after issuance. Meanwhile, Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum-based layer-2 network, recently created a commemorative NFT to celebrate its 1 billion transaction milestone, but faced accusations of copying the works of Chris Biron.

Base has promised to give NFT revenue to Biron and introduce stricter controls on future projects.
