French prosecutors have announced that an investigative judge extended the police custody of Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, on Monday evening for up to 48 hours.

After that, French authorities must either release or charge him.

Durov was detained on Saturday at Le Bourget airport amid a judicial investigation launched last month concerning 12 alleged criminal offenses, including complicity in selling child sexual abuse material and drug trafficking.

Durov holds citizenship in Russia, France, the United Arab Emirates, and St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Russian government has expressed strong objections to his detention. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron clarified that Durov’s arrest is not politically motivated but part of an independent judicial process.
