In 2017, a Reddit user with the handle “Donald Trump” shared their infamous Ethereum mistake that quickly went viral. The user was fairly new to cryptocurrency and was trying to transfer their ETH coins to a hardware wallet for safekeeping. However, instead of carefully copying the address to send their Ethereum to, they accidentally pasted the address of a smart contract they had recently interacted with.

What happened next? Their Ethereum was sent straight into a smart contract, with no way of retrieving it! To make matters worse, the smart contract wasn’t coded to receive and store Ether. It just swallowed up the coins, locking them in the Ethereum blockchain forever.

The amount lost? 500 ETH. At the time, this was worth around $150,000. It was a huge loss, and while the user was devastated, they at least provided a lesson for the rest of the community: always double-check your wallet address before sending crypto!

Despite the pain, the Reddit user embraced the absurdity of the situation, sharing their blunder online for others to laugh at and learn from. This story became a legendary cautionary tale in the crypto world and a reminder of how a small mistake can have big consequences in the wild world of cryptocurrency.

Moral of the story: Triple-check everything before hitting “send”!
