đš Hackers Hacked Macdonald's Instagram and Stole $700k! đ°
Hackers broke into McDonaldâs đ official Instagram account and used it to promote a fake cryptocurrency đ°, stealing $700,000.
A screenshot online showed McDonaldâs Instagram with a caption saying: âSorry, youâve just been rug pulled by India_X_Kr3w. Thanks for the $700,000 in Solana đž.â This message was seen by over 5.1 million followers and included an emoji of the Indian flag đźđł.
McDonaldâs said they were âaware of an incident affecting our social media accounts earlier today. Weâve fixed the issue and apologize for any offensive language posted.â In cryptocurrency terms, a ârug pullâ is a scam where people create a fake coin, hype it up đ, and then take all the money, leaving investors with worthless tokens.
Usually, scammers promote the fake coin on social media đ± and crypto forums, creating excitement and urging people to invest before the value increases. Once they gather enough money by linking the fake coin to known cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, they withdraw the money đ°, making the value drop to zero. The scammers then delete their social media accounts, making it hard for investors to find them and get their money back.
The hackers said they used McDonaldâs account to promote a fake meme coin called âGRIMACEâ on the Solana network, a platform for decentralized cryptocurrencies. In just 30 minutes, the fake tokenâs value went from zero to $25 million đ„ before crashing. Guillaume Huin, a senior marketing director at McDonaldâs, also had his social media accounts hacked, with posts promoting the fake coin. These posts were later deleted.
Grimace is the big purple character đŁ created by Hackers for their marketing.
