According to Cointelegraph, Mysten Labs, the creator of the Sui blockchain, has announced plans to deliver the SuiPlay0X1, the first handheld gaming device to integrate the Sui blockchain, in the first half of 2025. The company began taking preorders for the $599 device on September 3, which will support both PC games and games built on the Sui blockchain. The initial batch of devices is expected to ship in early 2025.

Mysten Labs co-founder Adeniyi Abiodun emphasized that the SuiPlay0X1 aims to demonstrate that games incorporating blockchain technology can offer a seamless experience comparable to traditional games. He highlighted that blockchain technology could enhance player ownership and provide a more engaging gaming experience without disrupting gameplay.

The SuiPlay0X1 will weigh 677 grams, feature an integrated graphics processing unit, and run on Playtron GameOS, a Linux-based operating system capable of running many AAA PC games without modification. Sui-powered games for the device will include the third-person shooter XOCIETY and the Nordic-inspired medieval Brawler Royale, DARKTIMES.

Mysten Labs, founded by four former Meta crypto executives in 2021, initially announced the development of the handheld gaming device during a Paris Sui Basecamp event in April. The SuiPlay0X1 will join other non-Web3 handheld gaming PCs like Valve Corporation’s Steam Deck, the Asus ROG Ally X, and the Lenovo Legion Go. Research from Omidia indicates that 19.3 million handheld gaming devices were sold globally in 2023, with projections suggesting an increase to 29.3 million units by 2028.

Preorders for the SuiPlay0X1 can be paid in Sui (SUI), Ether (ETH), and Solana (SOL). As of September 3, around 12 hours after the preorder announcement, over 1,000 preorders had been placed for the device.
