Deep Tide TechFlow news, on January 2, according to official news, the Ethereum Weekly (Week in Ethereum) (WiE), founded nearly ten years ago, officially ceased updates on January 1, 2025. Founder Evan Van Ness revealed three main reasons for the cessation.

  1. Foundation Attitude Shift: At the beginning of 2024, the leadership of the Ethereum Foundation (EF) stated that it did not recognize the value of WiE, and subsequently provided only symbolic funding. When EF completely terminated funding, WiE also ceased operations.

  2. Business Model Dilemma: Van Ness stated that advertising and sponsorship revenue is difficult to sustain. The marketing department generally does not value developer-oriented channels, combined with high content quality requirements, making profitability challenging. He rejected a sponsorship of 1000-2000 ETH offered by an ICO project in 2017 (whose founder was later arrested), reflecting his commitment to content quality and ethical standards.

  3. Ecological Value Bias: Van Ness further stated on Twitter that the Ethereum ecosystem has issues of 'focusing only on code development and research, while neglecting other contributions.' Despite hundreds of people wanting to take over or receive WiE for free, this actually proves the ecosystem's insufficient recognition of the value of quality content.

WiE was one of the most important news sources in the Ethereum ecosystem at its peak, having a profound impact on the developer community. Many developers expressed to Van Ness at conferences that WiE helped them build careers in Solidity development and security, and even influenced their decisions to purchase ETH.

Van Ness finally stated that although there are still institutions expressing willingness to acquire or fund WiE, he believes this goes against the philosophy of public goods. 'Life is short, I want to focus on meaningful things. It has been a wonderful journey, but all good things must come to an end.'
