According to Bloomberg reports, the U.S. Treasury indicated in a letter to Congress that the agency was attacked by hackers sponsored by the Chinese government, describing the intrusion as a 'significant cybersecurity incident' because it was carried out by state-sponsored actors.

Chinese government-sponsored hackers infiltrated the U.S. Treasury.

Third-party software provider BeyondTrust Inc. notified the Treasury that a hacker gained access to 'the vendor's key access privileges used to protect cloud-based services, which provide remote technical support to the Treasury office's users.' The hacker was able to remotely access certain Treasury workstations and 'some non-confidential documents maintained by these users.'

A Treasury spokesperson stated, 'The affected BeyondTrust service has been taken offline, and there is no evidence that the threat actors continue to use Treasury systems or information.'

According to government data compiled by Bloomberg, BeyondTrust sells management access software and other cybersecurity products, having signed contracts worth over $4 million with the federal government. BeyondTrust also conducts business with the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Justice, and other agencies in addition to the Treasury.

The 'Salt Typhoon' has infiltrated U.S. communication information.

The revelation of this incident comes as the White House continues to investigate the so-called state-sponsored hackers from China targeting the large-scale cyber espionage activities against U.S. telecommunications companies. The White House stated that nine telecommunications companies were affected by these attacks, attributed to an organization nicknamed 'Salt Typhoon.'

Reportedly, hackers spent months lurking in the U.S. telecommunications network, collecting an unspecified number of Americans' phone and text message information. According to The New York Times, then-presidential candidate Trump, his campaign partner Vance, Trump's family, as well as members of Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign team were all targeted.

The Chinese embassy in Washington stated in an email that it opposes the U.S. 'baselessly smearing and attacking China.' The U.S. should stop using cybersecurity to smear China and stop spreading false information about so-called Chinese hacker threats.

Previously, Chinese President Xi Jinping also told U.S. President Biden at the APEC meeting, 'There is no evidence to support the so-called irrational claim of cyberattacks from China.'
