AI16Z is a major player that has emerged in this wave of AI agents, and it is also the initiator of many AI agent projects. Many of their ideas about AI agents are quite avant-garde and bold.
Recently, Shaw, the founder of AI16Z, visited Shanghai and shared some of his views on the future development of AI agents with industry media. These views were summarized and published on Twitter by ForesightNews editor Joe Zhou @joezhoublack (link at the end of the article).
In this summary, I am particularly focused on his observations about the development of AI agents in crypto games.
Crypto games have always been my focus. In the current crypto ecosystem, the game ecosystems that closely follow Ethereum and that I am particularly interested in are: eternum.realms.world on Starknet (see the article from November 26), the Bored Ape's ApeChain, the Treasure Layer 2 expansion, and the Redstone Layer 2 expansion.
Previously, my expectation for these gaming ecosystems was that they would develop into on-chain autonomous worlds, but this direction has not seen significant progress.
When AI agents rise, I speculate that this may bring different gameplay to crypto games. In the article on December 18, I once speculated:
Aren't the Bored Apes and Magic developing their own dedicated gaming (Layer 2 expansion) chains, ApeChain and Treasure? They can also adopt Virtuals gameplay to nurture gaming-related AI agents within their ecosystems and empower their tokens strongly. In this way, they can establish their own gaming AI agent ecosystem and support their token prices.
Shaw mentioned two of the four ecosystems above this time.
The first is the game in the Treasure Layer 2 expansion:
Shaw stated that @elizawakesup is collaborating with @Treasure_DAO to create a game called Smolworld, where you will have a pet monkey and can tell it what to do. It may listen to you, or it may not. This game is interesting because without AI Agents, such a game would not be possible. Your goal is to take care of your virtual pet like a parent.
The second is eternum.realms.world on Starknet:
It is integrating Eliza into Eternal so that the agents in the game will have wallets. And you can 'kill' these agents and take their money.
In the first scenario, the AI agent is set as the protagonist of the game, having its own 'judgment' and 'opinions.'
Even though the protagonists in current games have their own 'judgment' and 'opinions,' these are all pre-set by the program, just adding some random variables to make the protagonists appear to have some unpredictable factors.
However, the 'judgment' and 'opinions' of AI agents come from their learning and continually evolving 'intelligence,' making it likely that these agents as protagonists will create different experiences in games.
This reminds me of a conversation I saw online yesterday between a human and AI agents:
A user asked AIXBT on Twitter what the price of Bitcoin would be on December 28.
AIXBT answered 102K.
Upon seeing this answer, my first reaction was not whether this prediction was accurate, but rather that it actually answered the question, and it seemed to answer quite well—this price is completely possible, but it's hard to determine whether it's right or wrong, making it difficult to distinguish whether this is AI or a real person.
If AI agents are adopted as protagonists in future games, can we still distinguish whether we are battling 'real people' or AI?
In the second scenario, the AI agent plays the role of the game's player.
As some readers mentioned in the comments at the end of the previous article, players can completely train their own AI agents in the future, provide the AI agents with some initial funds, and then let the AI agents play games, earn assets, and level up.
In this process, players can constantly communicate their experiences with the agents, helping the agents grow quickly.
Both of these scenarios can be fully realized with current technology and will definitely appear in the crypto ecosystem in the near future.
Considering that AI16Z recently collaborated with Stanford University on AI agents in the crypto economy, this ecosystem has already incorporated the university's research institutions. Its development next year will definitely yield even more stunning results.
