A month ago, my friend suffered a massive loss of $26,800 while transferring USDT! This incident has alerted all cryptocurrency players: in this uncertain market, every small detail must not be overlooked.
The Mistaken Transfer
Here's how it happened:
My friend intended to transfer $25,500 USDT from KuCoin to his business partner's OKX wallet. The partner provided an ERC20 network address, and he thought everything was fine. However, during the operation, he accidentally selected the Polygon network without realizing it. After confirming with one click, the money was deducted from the account, but the partner's wallet did not receive any funds.
No matter how hard he tried to recover it, it ultimately failed because the OKX wallet does not support deposits on the Polygon network at all. This meant that the USDT was ultimately “lost,” and the loss was irreversible.
Lessons Learned
1. Network Mismatch: The target address should use the ERC20 network, but the funds were transferred to the Polygon network, resulting in a failed transaction.
2. Irreversible Transfers: Unlike bank remittances, cryptocurrency transfers cannot be canceled or reversed once confirmed; the error must be borne by the sender.
How to Avoid Repeating the Mistake?
1. Double-check Wallet Address: Ensure that the recipient's address and the specified network match perfectly, and do not be careless.
2. Ensure Network Compatibility: Confirm before transferring that the selected network is compatible with the recipient's network to avoid losses due to network incompatibility.
3. Test Small Amount Before Large Transfers: Send a small amount first for testing, and once everything is confirmed to be correct, proceed with the larger transfer.
