According to Odaily, Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox, now serving as the product lead at Shielded Labs, is pushing for an accelerated upgrade of the protocol to a hybrid proof-of-stake (PoS) system. Shielded Labs, an independent organization based in Switzerland, is dedicated to supporting Zcash. Wilcox recently stated that after eight years of using proof-of-work (PoW) mining, Zcash needs to transition to a hybrid PoS system. He noted that the PoW consensus and the issuance of new coins have exerted downward pressure on its price, but this pressure is expected to ease as the rate of new coin issuance decreases. Wilcox highlighted two major upcoming improvements: the deployment of the Zcash Sustainability Fund and the upgrade to 'Crosslink,' a hybrid PoW and PoS protocol. He emphasized the goal of deploying this technology as quickly as possible while maintaining Zcash's strong security record. The benefits of the upgrade include allowing ZEC holders to stake, providing finality to protect users from rollback attacks, reducing transaction times, and enabling more secure two-way bridging to other networks. However, Wilcox did not elaborate on the technical details or provide a timeline for the upgrade.
