Funding rate fee in futures trading 🫰

💁‍♀️ Funding rates are fees paid to those who are either long or short based on the difference between futures contract markets and spot prices of the same asset.

Funding rates prevent divergence in the price of both markets, therefore, depending on open positions, traders will either pay or receive fees.

◾️ When the funding rate is positive, users who have long positions pay a funding fee to users who have short positions.

◾️ When the funding rate is negative, users who have short positions pay a fee to users who have long positions.

Usually, funding is paid 3 times a day — every 8 hours.

Example:

• You open a $10,000 Long position on the ETH/USDT futures pair.

• Funding is +0.01%

• 0.01 x 3 = 0.03

• $10,000 - 0.03% = $3

• You will pay $3 to Shorts every day if the funding rate stays the same.

💰 This is crucial for traders, it's even possible to make money using funding arbitrage.
