AI is taking over the grunt work in healthcare, and doctors couldn’t be more ready for the help. Investment in artificial intelligence tools for medical note-taking hit $800 million in 2024, more than doubling from $390 million in 2023.

The $26 billion healthcare AI market has Big Tech and scrappy startups battling it out. Startups like Nabla, Heidi, Corti, and Tortus are leading the charge, backed by investors like Khosla Ventures and French billionaire Xavier Niel.

These companies reportedly want to turn AI into the perfect medical scribe, automating note-taking to save time and improve patient care. Meanwhile, Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle have jumped into the race with their own AI-driven tools.

Tech giants take the lead

Microsoft has made one of the biggest splashes. After acquiring Nuance for $20 billion in 2022, the tech giant launched the DAX Copilot. This tool uses large language models and speech recognition to document patient visits, highlight key medical details, and generate clinical summaries.

Already, DAX Copilot is reportedly transcribing over 1.3 million physician-patient interactions every month across more than 500 U.S. healthcare groups. Microsoft says it can cut doctors’ time spent on documentation by half.

At Stanford Medical School, more than 50 primary care physicians tested the DAX Copilot in 2024. While two-thirds of them said the tool saved time, they weren’t just hitting “approve” on AI-generated notes. A whopping 90% of the notes needed manual corrections. But even with the extra editing, doctors found the tool valuable enough for Stanford to plan a broader rollout.

Amazon and Oracle are chasing Microsoft’s lead, rolling out their own AI-powered solutions for healthcare. These tools integrate large language models with advanced speech recognition to turn conversations into polished medical records.

On the startup side, Nabla is making waves in Europe. Using OpenAI’s Whisper transcription tool, Nabla’s app has processed over 7 million medical visits as of October 2023. Apparently, the app saves three to four minutes per patient, freeing up hours in a packed clinic day.

AI controversy and concerns

Not everyone is cheering for AI’s growing role in healthcare though. Researchers have raised alarms about “hallucinations,” where AI tools fabricate data. A study by Cornell University and the University of Virginia analyzed Whisper-generated transcripts and found that about 1% of them included phrases that were completely made up.

Even worse, 40% of these errors involved harmful misinformation, such as suggesting false medical facts or even perpetuating violence.

These issues are real risks in a field where accuracy is literally a matter of life and death. Doctors using AI tools are still double-checking every note, and for good reasons. While AI can speed up workflows, it’s not perfect, and any errors can have serious consequences.

Privacy is another hot-button issue. Handling sensitive medical data with AI raises questions about how secure the systems really are. Hospitals and tech companies claim to prioritize data security, but skepticism remains. Critics think that the rush to adopt these tools might overlook critical safeguards.

Still, many doctors believe the benefits outweigh the risks.

AI expands its dominance across industries

AI is embedding itself into nearly every major sector in the United States. Diagnostics is one of its most impressive applications. Algorithms now process medical images faster and more accurately than doctors, identifying cancers, fractures, and other conditions in record time. This capability is particularly critical in emergency settings, where speed can save lives.

AI is also at the forefront of personalized treatment plans, tailoring therapies to individual patients by analyzing genetic data and medical histories. Known as precision medicine, this approach is revolutionizing outcomes for patients who once relied on one-size-fits-all treatments.

Surgical robotics is another area too. These systems assist surgeons with complex procedures, reducing human error and speeding up recovery times for patients.

The transportation sector is also undergoing an AI-driven transformation. Autonomous vehicles are becoming more reliable, using real-time data to get through roads and reduce accidents. Traffic flows more smoothly with these vehicles in operation, cutting congestion in busy cities.

AI also predicts maintenance needs for transportation fleets, preventing breakdowns and keeping supply chains running on time.

Finance is another area where AI is firmly entrenched. Fraud detection systems are now capable of scanning millions of transactions to identify suspicious activity, helping banks protect their customers and their bottom lines.

On Wall Street, AI algorithms dominate trading floors, analyzing market trends and executing trades faster than human traders ever could. These tools have completely changed how financial firms approach investments, turning data into profits at lightning speed.

In retail, AI is focused on understanding and anticipating customer behavior. By analyzing purchase histories and preferences, AI delivers personalized shopping recommendations that boost sales. Inventory management is another area where AI excels, predicting demand with uncanny accuracy and ensuring shelves are stocked with what customers want while minimizing waste.

Even education has embraced AI. U.S. colleges are now using AI tools to streamline admissions processes. These systems analyze test scores, transcripts, and personal essays, categorizing applicants to save time for overburdened admissions officers. With increasing competition for spots at top universities, these tools are proving invaluable.

Agriculture is being redefined by precision farming techniques powered by AI. Drones equipped with sensors scan fields for crop health and soil conditions, ensuring that irrigation and other resources are used efficiently. This leads to higher yields while conserving water and other inputs.

Entertainment hasn’t escaped AI’s reach either. Streaming services like Netflix rely on algorithms to recommend content tailored to individual preferences. Beyond recommendations, AI is generating new music, movies, and even video games, expanding the boundaries of creative industries.
