According to Cointelegraph, at the Korea Blockchain Week 2024, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin discussed the potential of artificial intelligence and prediction market technology to expedite the creation of community notes on the social media platform X. Community notes allow users to add context to potentially misleading posts, with contributors leaving notes that, if rated helpful by enough users, are displayed publicly below the post.
Buterin acknowledged that while community notes are beneficial, their primary criticism is the delay in their appearance, which can result in misleading information spreading before the notes are added. He suggested that prediction markets could address this issue by speeding up the process. Prediction markets are platforms where users can bet on specific outcomes, such as the decentralized prediction platform Polymarket, which covers topics like politics, sports, and crypto.
Buterin proposed that prediction markets could serve as a building block to accelerate other mechanisms. He explained that when a post is made, a question could be posed to determine if it requires a community note. Users could then employ large AI language models and bots to place small bets on this prediction market. This approach could potentially hasten the process of verifying information and incentivize participants to contribute accurately.
He elaborated that this mechanism would reward those who correctly predict the need for a community note, thus creating a low-cost but fast vector for ensuring the accuracy of information. This method, according to Buterin, could significantly enhance the efficiency and reliability of community notes on social media platforms.
