Solana memecoin Water has added football icon Lionel Messi to its list of marketing achievements. 

Argentinian captain and FC Barcelona legend Lionel Messi promoted Solana memecoin Water (WATER) on his Instagram story to his 504 million followers. Water’s Instagram page also reposted the story, and a spokesperson confirmed Messi’s endorsement of the project as an official representative.

CoinGecko data showed that WATER jumped nearly 60% after the post, but the gains have since receded to a mere 4.5% gain. According to DEX Screener, the token was launched two weeks ago and currently boasts a $73.6 million market cap with more than $105 million daily trading volume.

Celebrities and memecoins are becoming a common pair in today’s meme ecosystem, with everyone from music artists to professional fighters wading into the space.

Water seeks to set itself apart from the bunch with promises to fund global charities and research organizations. The Solana-based aqua project is also the first to announce a connection to a major star like Messi, after raising an estimated $42 million in SOL during its pre-sale.

Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin had previously called for better meme projects with a social good outlined as an end goal.
