Can DEX Overshadow CEX In the Future?
With the rate at which crypto investors are seeking privacy and the upgrades happening in decentralized exchanges, one may think that DEXes will someday overshadow CEXes.
Recently, we have seen some decentralized exchanges that have the features of a centralized exchange and a decentralized exchange (CLOB). These dual features have made such an exchange attractive to most crypto investors and might shift them away from centralized exchanges.
One of the main reasons why people use centralized exchanges is because of the features they have which were wanting in decentralized exchanges. With the presence of such features in decentralized exchanges now, could this indicate a new reign for CLOBs?
Even though decentralized exchanges now have the features of centralized exchanges, the risks associated with the use of smart contracts are still an issue. An exploit on Smart contracts can put a user's wallet at risk. Because these decentralized exchanges have low proof of reserve, they may not be able to pay investors when such exploits lead to loss of funds. Secondly, the interface of CLOBs is still not user-friendly. Many newbies will prefer to use centralized exchanges to it because it is easier to navigate CEX than DEX.
Centralized exchanges are not immutable to hacks either. We have seen some top exchanges being hacked in the past. However, they have strengthened their security and have stopped the system of an individual having full control of the entire exchange. Again, over the years, they have been able to build a strong proof of reserve which will have made people trust them. Of course, DEX has a more friendly interface.
Nevertheless, we shouldn't look to see whether DEX will overcome CEX or vice versa, we should see these improvements as opportunities to have varying avenues and platforms for our trading activities. The crypto world will be better when there are more options for every particular trade.
This presence of varying options will promote healthy competition and a continuous quest to be better and attract more users. We the users will thus be at the receiving end and enjoy the benefit of having several options.
Another fact is that both exchanges need to be around so that investors can use what is not available in CEXes in the DEXes. Some new projects prefer to launch in CEX because they will be more exposed to investors, some also prefer to launch in DEX.
In conclusion, both centralized exchanges and decentralized exchanges need to be around because they serve various purposes, and the co-existence of the two exchanges will help improve the Crypro world.
