GUELPH SENIOR LOST $34K IN AN ONLINE SCAM: POLICE.

A senior in Guelph is out $34,000 as a result of an online scam, police say.

A woman in her 60s from Guelph got scammed out of $34,000, according to the police.

The woman's family reached out to Guelph police after she received a Facebook message over the weekend. The message claimed to be about a benefits program for disabled retirees.

The scammers told her she was approved for $380,000 but needed to pay $39,000 for insurance. She met with a man named Mark in a gas station parking lot twice, handing over $17,000 each time in cash. Fortunately, her family intervened and alerted the police before more money was lost.

The police are searching for a man in his 20s, around five feet 10 inches tall, clean shaven with a thin build, and often wearing a black hoodie. During one meeting, he was carrying a small child.
