The token collapsed within three hours of its release. The scammers designed it as a pump-and-dump scheme. They controlled most of the tokens to manipulate the market. After driving up the price, they sold their tokens. This caused the value to drop almost to zero.

How the Scam Worked

Pump-and-dump schemes are common in the cryptocurrency market. Scammers create hype to increase an asset's value. When prices peak, they sell their holdings. This leaves other investors with worthless tokens. SQUID followed this same strategy. Its price fell from $0.1442 to $0.0000000000001269 in hours.

The scam took advantage of the excitement around Squid Game Season 2. The show includes a storyline about cryptocurrency losses. Scammers used this connection to make the token seem legitimate. The token was not officially linked to the series but still drew attention due to the show’s success.

Similar Scam in 2021

This is not the first time Squid Game inspired a cryptocurrency scam. In 2021, scammers launched another SQUID token. It promised play-to-earn games based on the show. The token’s value rose to $2,856 before crashing to zero. The creators disappeared with millions of dollars, leaving investors with no way to recover.

Crypto experts have warned investors to stay cautious. Scammers often exploit popular trends to attract victims. Tokens linked to famous shows or events are often suspicious. Fraud in cryptocurrency remains a serious issue. Scammers continue to use creative ways to trick people.
