Viral pygmy hippo Moo Deng has been formally sponsored by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin with an 88 ETH donation, showcasing crypto's potential for social impact.

Ethereum Co-Founder Supports Thai Zoo

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has donated 88 ETH—equivalent to 10 million Thai baht—to Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. This contribution officially makes Buterin the sponsor of Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus and a viral sensation at the zoo.

Announcing the donation on December 26, the zoo expressed gratitude through a post on X:

“Thank you Vitalik Buterin for joining the Wildlife Sponsorship Program and adopting Moo Deng with a generous gift of 10,000,000 THB for her family! We look forward to working with you over the next 2 years.”

Moo Deng: A Viral Star

Moo Deng gained widespread recognition in September 2024 for her charismatic social media presence. Videos showcasing her playful personality turned the pygmy hippo into a global phenomenon.

Buterin, in his own X post, shared his enthusiasm about sponsoring Moo Deng:

"I'm happy to be adoptive father to Moo Deng as she grows up over the next 2y and support her with my 10M THB donation, maybe more as I set aside 88 ETH for [Moo Deng] + frens.”

Motivations Behind the Donation

The Ethereum co-founder’s visit to the zoo in November 2024 reinforced his appreciation for its commitment to animal welfare and education. Reflecting on his experience, Buterin acknowledged the warmth of Thailand and its contributions to Ethereum’s success, particularly following events like the Devcon Sea blockchain conference.

He stated,

“This could not have happened without the warmth and kindness of Thailand and our Thai organisers. What better way to show appreciation than through a Christmas present to someone dear to all Thai people, Moo Deng, who has become an unexpected Thai celebrity on the global stage.”

Impact on Memecoin and Crypto Community

Moo Deng’s rise to fame also inspired the creation of a Solana-based memecoin, MOODENG. While its creator donated over 10 billion tokens to Buterin, he sold them to direct proceeds toward charitable causes. However, the token's market trajectory highlighted the volatility of memecoin trading. After a peak valuation of $0.62 in mid-November, the token fell by 58%, raising concerns about insider activity.

But Buterin’s 88 ETH donation reversed the token’s fortunes. The MOODENG token surged over 70% in 24 hours and recorded a 125% weekly increase following the announcement.

This latest initiative aligns with Buterin’s philosophy of leveraging cryptocurrencies for meaningful global contributions.
