Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming more powerful and presents both opportunities and dangers. Recently, an AI-powered malicious API attack hit the Solana blockchain ecosystem, causing significant damage to users. A Solana user used ChatGPT to create a simple app, but the AI-generated API link led to a malicious server.
The malicious API requested the private key of the user’s wallet and, once gained access, stole assets including SOL and USDC. This incident resulted in over 281 transactions and the attackers looted various Solana-based assets as well as meme coins such as ELIZA, CHILLGIRL, and AI16Z. The attack is likely to be intentionally buggy code placed by malicious actors in various open source repositories.
The case highlights that AI tools without proper monitoring and control can pose serious security risks, especially in the areas of Web3 and blockchain technologies. Here are some lessons to be learned: avoid unknown sources, use separate wallets for online connections or experimental applications, and never share your private keys.
This incident is likely just the beginning of a new era of AI-assisted attacks.
