A Chinese cargo ship may have damaged two fiber-optic data cables under the Baltic Sea, cutting off internet access for tens of thousands of people in Finland, Germany, Sweden and Lithuania. Denmark’s navy boarded the ship, Yi Peng 3, and the incident has been called an act of sabotage. The cables may take up to two weeks to repair, and experts say the incident has been designed to spread panic and increase pressure on Western governments.

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation has initiated criminal proceedings in the case.
