Meta is introducing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based age estimation software to detect teens who lie about their age on Instagram. This will automatically move them to a teen account if the software believes they are not telling the truth. Meta introduced teen accounts in September, following the backlash over the impact social networking sites such as Instagram and Facebook have on the mental health of teenagers.
These accounts are designed for 13-17-year-olds and have built-in restrictions on who can contact them and what content they can see. Meta has developed a new software tool called the “adult classifier” that will be launched early next year, dividing users into those under 18 and those over. The tool examines a user’s profile, viewed content, and follower list to determine age, using even seemingly innocuous “happy birthday” messages to help figure out their real age.
The teen branches are new and currently run on a voluntary basis, so many teenagers still use traditional adult accounts. Meta plans to automatically transfer teens who provide their age to new teen accounts soon, followed by the rollout of the “adult classifier” early next year.
