ethereum pectra upgrade

YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — Ethereum developers are discussing a potential split for the much-anticipated Pectra upgrade. The aim is to boost the network’s scalability and efficiency. The first phase may be launched by early 2025.

Ethereum Developers Consider Pectra Split for Faster Delivery

On September 12, Ethereum’s core developers considered splitting the Pectra upgrade during an execution layer meeting. The upgrade combines two key developments: the Prague upgrade, which impacts the network’s execution layer, and the Electra upgrade, focused on the consensus layer. By splitting Pectra into two phases, the team is aiming for a faster release, targeting early 2025.

One developer noted that the goal is to deliver the first phase as quickly as possible.

“There is broad agreement that if we split, the idea is that we want to ship Pectra one quicker, or as quick as possible, early next year should be our target,”

The developer said. The potential for a split would allow for a more controlled, smaller release.

Another developer, Danno Ferrin, echoed this by saying,

“Splitting the fork only makes sense if we are talking Q1 delivery.”

A February 2025 deadline is seen as realistic if the upgrade is split.

Concerns Over Delays in Pectra’s Delivery

The complexity of the Pectra upgrade has raised concerns about potential delays. Ansgar Dietrichs, an Ethereum researcher, emphasized the need for timely delivery.

“I think a split where we still only ship the first half in, say, June would be a failure,”

Dietrichs said developers must ensure that delays don’t delay the full rollout of the upgrade beyond early 2025.

Ethereum’s developers convene regularly to deliberate on updates. The upcoming All Core Developers (ACD) meeting, set for September 19, is expected to finalize the decision on splitting the Pectra upgrade.

They aim to minimize the risks associated with a large-scale release by opting to split the upgrade. Smaller upgrades are generally less risky and can be executed more efficiently. If the split is approved, the first phase of Pectra is poised to enhance Ethereum’s execution and consensus layers significantly.

High Expectations for Pectra Upgrade in the Ethereum Community

The Ethereum community and researchers are optimistic about the Pectra upgrade. Christine Kim, a researcher at Galaxy, believes the chances of a split are high due to the complexity of the Pectra fork and the desire to add more elements to the upgrade. Kim highlighted that developers handle a highly intricate upgrade that could see major changes if split into two phases.

Sassal, an Ethereum educator with a large following on X, also commented on the upgrade scale, stating that Pectra is “shaping up to be the biggest in Ethereum’s history.” This reflects the broader anticipation surrounding the potential improvements that Pectra could bring to Ethereum’s scalability and performance.

However, any delays in the split decision could impact the timeline, making the February 2025 target critical for Ethereum developers to meet.

Ethereum Improvement Proposal 3074 in the Next Update

Ethereum developers are focusing on other network improvements in addition to Pectra. In April 2024, Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 3074 was approved for inclusion in the next major update. This proposal will allow regular wallets like MetaMask to function similarly to smart contracts, introducing new features like transaction bundling.

The upgrade will enhance the user experience by allowing functions that simplify wallet operations, such as users only needing to sign once for bundled transactions. This proposal reflects Ethereum’s commitment to improving the network’s overall efficiency while continuing to evolve its infrastructure.
