Malaysia's Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, recently revealed that illegal crypto mining operations in the country have stolen $723 million worth of electricity between 2018 and 2023. These illicit activities are causing harm to both the state-controlled power operator and locals in the affected regions. While crypto mining is legal in Malaysia, stealing electricity for mining is not. The country has been seizing crypto miners since 2019, with over 2,000 items confiscated in October 2022 alone. The crackdown extends to unregistered exchanges, with Huobi Global ordered to cease operations last year.
