North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has vetoed a bill that would prevent the state from adopting a Federal Reserve-issued central bank digital currency (CBDC). Despite the bill receiving overwhelming support in both the House and Senate, Cooper described it as "premature, vague and reactionary". Critics have accused Cooper of making a politically motivated decision, with some suggesting the veto was a missed opportunity to show North Carolina's opposition to a CBDC. However, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has previously stated that the U.S. is not close to adopting a CBDC.
