- 2008 – السيد ناكاموتو الغامض
في 2008 وفي ظل الأزمة العالمية المالية نشرت شخصية غامضة تحمل اسم ساتوشي ناكاموتو رسالة في قائمة بريدية متخصصة يعلن فيها أنه بصدد إنشاء عملة رقمية لامركزية بعيدة عن مراقبة الحكومات والسلطات المالية وقام بدعوة المطورين الذين يرغبون في ذلك إلى مساعدته في مشروعه.وفي عام 2009 ظهرت أول عملة رقمية وهي البتكوين

-2011 -2013 ظهور العملات المنافسة وتعطيل سعر البتكوين
في عام 2011 ظهرت عملات مشفرة منافسة مع زيادة شعبية البتكوين تعرف باسم ال altcoin وكان الهدف منها تقديم ميزات أفضل من ميزات البتكوين مثل تقديم سرعة اكبر و اخفاء الهوية والكثير من الميزات الاخرى ومن أشهر العملات التي ظهرت آنذاك Litecoin و Namecoin ويوجد حالياً أكثر من 1000 عملة يتم التداول بها حول العالم.

وفي عام 2013 بدأ سعر البتكوين بالانخفاض حتى وصل الى حوالي 300 دولار بعد ان وصل الى 1000 دولار

- 2016 – 2017
ظهرت في عام 2016 عملة مشفرة جديدة أطلق عليها اسم الايثريوم (Ethereum) وكادت ان تسرق الاضواء من البتكوين ولكن استمرت شعبية البتكوين في 2017 حيث زاد استخدامها وكانت الأموال تتدفق الى نظام Bitcoin و cryptocoi وخلال هذه الفترة ارتفعت القيمة السوقية لجميع العملات المشفرة الى ما يزيد عن 300 مليار دولار.
