The European Commission is assessing risks and considering export controls on critical technology areas, including AI and semiconductor technologies. EU officials identified four areas needing assessment: AI, advanced semiconductors, quantum technologies, and biotechnologies. These technologies were chosen due to their transformative nature and potential risks. Thierry Breton, the commissioner for the internal market, called this an important step for EU resilience. The risk assessments will be completed by the end of the year, with results and initiatives presented by spring 2024.
