According to Foresight News, during a keynote speech at the South Korea Blockchain Week KBW2023, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin addressed the issue of clients having to store increasing amounts of data. He proposed three potential solutions to this problem.

The first solution involves stopping the storage of historical data by adopting EIP-444 (binding historical data in the client). This would require clients to stop providing historical headers, bodies, and receipts older than one year on the p2p layer. Clients could then delete (prune) this historical data locally.

The second solution suggests transferring the responsibility of state storage to dedicated nodes. The third solution involves moving old objects out of the state.

Buterin concluded that if statelessness and PBS are achieved, state expiration could be considered a low priority, even with an 8 TB state. Ultimately, the 20-byte address issue needs to be resolved, whether for state expiration or long-term security considerations.
